With increase involvement in social networks, such as Facebook and Myspace, college students are now learning that their words and photographs are reaching far beyond the peers whom they were intended. The increase of student involvement in social networks has caused authority figures to monitor what students are doing online. There are numerous reasons why different institutions are feeling the need to monitor students' activity. Because of its popularity, though, these sites has become a topic for debate about free speech, privacy and whether the Internet should be a tool for surveillance.
