These fan fiction sites bring to mind an article that I read within the past few months about JK Rowling and her dealings with fan fiction websites for her character Harry Potter. She generally welcomes the sites and annually rates them for quality. However, this article was highlighting that JK Rowling was suing a fan site that was going to publish their fan-fiction spin off into book form. She argues that while internet material is open and in the spirit of supporting her work with Harry Potter, the act of publishing material for profit is where she wants to legally draw the line. J.K. Rowling makes a good point. The production of fan fiction is an interesting, imaginative, and creative process that often produces some works or pieces that are better or similar to the fiction it is about. Encouraging this creativity and support of the world that she created is probably what she expects to happen. However it would be a serious breach in her intellectual property rights for someone else to create a spin off series with the intent to sell without her consent. Many series have created such spin off series however, I'm sure the authors were approved of by the original creator and given consent.
