People often ge heavily addited to these massively multi player online games. Somtimes they spend their lives on their, devoting time to the game, but not life. This can often be an escape from a mundane or boring life. It may start out for fun, but may grow to an obsession, much like with any addiction. The trouble is when people prefer online to real life. The MUD's are like this, and so are games like World of War Craft. It can be seriously troublesome, but to each their own.
